Safe Driving Tips For The Holiday Season

Advice from Your Imperial Chiropractor

During the holidays, an auto accident chiropractor treats more people suffering whiplash and other car accident-related injuries than at any other time of the year. With millions of people traveling on the roads between Christmas and New Year's, the chance of you and your family being involved in a car accident increases dramatically, mainly because of congested roads and impaired drivers.

Dr. Amato and the staff at Advanced Family Chiropractic and Rehabilitation wishes all our patients to remain as safe as possible while traveling during the holidays with these safe driving tips:

  • Don't take long trips on tires more than three years old. Although the tread may look good, older tires tend to have weakened spots that could lead to blowouts.
  • If you plan on driving in heavy traffic, leave early to give yourself more time to reach your destination. The less stressed you are, the less likely you will speed or drive recklessly.
  • Drive defensively, not offensively. Use your side view and rearview mirrors frequently to monitor traffic behind and beside you.
  • Recognize possible signs of an impaired driver such as driving too slow, swerving from one side of the lane to the other and slowing down/speeding up without reason. If you suspect you are following or being followed by a drunk driver, call 911 and give the operator the driver's license plate number.
  • Try not to drive between midnight and 4 am. This is when most drunk driving/impaired driving accidents occur.
  • SLOW DOWN in snow or ice. Just a dusting of snow can produce slick spots on roads.
  • Never engage with an angry driver. If another driver cuts you off or attempts to make you pull over, call 911 for assistance.
