Differences Between Bulging and Herniated Discs

Bulging and herniated discs are common causes of back pain. Even though some people use them interchangeably, they actually describe two different but related problems. Here are the differences between the two conditions:

Bulging Discs

These are spinal discs that are bulging out from the normal shape. Often, they are compressed from top to bottom as well. This gives them a flatter, but wider, profile.

Since the tough material that makes up the exterior of discs is sensitive, they can be painful when they bulge. The bulging can also interfere with the nerves in an around the affected disc, causing even more pain.

Herniated Discs

A herniated disc is one that has ruptured. Fluid from inside leaks out and interferes with the nerves around it. This causes extreme pain in most cases, both from the tear in the disc itself and from the interference caused by the fluid.

Causes of Bulging and Herniated Discs

There are a few main causes of these problems. Injury due to trauma such as an auto accident, long-term overexertion, and degenerative disc disease can all result in bulging and herniated discs. Notably, it is possible to halt the progression of degenerative disc disease with proper treatment. Therefore, those with this diagnosis should not give up.

Chiropractic Treatments

Chiropractic treatments for both herniated and bulging discs have some similarities. The chiropractor will maneuver the vertebrae to correct misalignments and reduce pressure on the damaged discs. Other treatments, such as spinal decompression, are often provided as well. Spinal decompression is especially important for herniated discs because it can help the fluid get pulled back into its proper location.

Our chiropractors do not use cookie cutter treatments for their patients. Instead, each patient is evaluated to determine the best possible courses of action. Then, treatments are customized according to individual needs. As time goes on, changes are made as necessary.
